Stephen Buzan

December 31st, 1941January 8th, 2023

Stephen Mills Buzan (“Steve”), 81, of Solomons, Md., died on January 8, 2023, near his daughter’s home in Lafayette, Colo. He died peacefully after a valiant battle with esophageal cancer. His last words spoken while holding the hands of his daughter and granddaughter just hours before his death were, “I love you.”

Steve was the oldest child born to Jean Elizabeth Mills and Norwood H. Buzan on December 31, 1941, in Washington, Ind. He graduated from Washington High School in 1960. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business in 1965 from Indiana University where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and the IU student foundation. He was a lifetime member of the IU Alumni Association.

Steve’s sense of loyalty and responsibility for his family ran deep and constant throughout his life. His father died suddenly during his senior year in college which prompted his return to Washington to take over the family farm. He, along with his brother, Rick, grew it into a thriving operation until it was sold in 1987. During those years he and his wife raised two beloved daughters imparting the importance of humility, self-reliance, curiosity, and education. When he was not providing for his family, Steve enjoyed countless rounds of golf at the Washington Country Club and was elected to two terms on the Washington School Board, serving as president for two of those years.

Steve’s next adventure took him east to Maryland where he worked as the operations manager at American Tent and Event until he retired in 2007. He moved onto his sailboat in Solomons, Md. where he lived exactly the way he wanted in the place he loved until November 18, 2022. He shared his love of sailing and the water with his youngest daughter, and his love of skiing and the mountains with his oldest daughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by daughters Stephanie Walton of Lafayette, Colo., Gretchen (Tim Haines) Hartke of Eagle River, Wis., former wife and dear friend Susan Lloyd Buzan of Bloomington, Ind.; siblings Cynthia (Jim) Doll of Bremo Bluff, Va., John Buzan of Montgomery, Ala., Rick (Rhonda) Buzan of Carmel, Ind., Becky (Kim) Smith of Bloomington, Ill.; grandchildren Maya and Beres Walton.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you spend some quality time near the water or breathing in some fresh mountain air.

Condolences

I worked with Steve for many years at Ellis tent and event. Sorry to hear of his passing and will miss him. Also knew susan, she worked at the Mac building in one of the offices upstairs. Sorry to hear, sorry for your loss. We were good friends. Remember his pipe he loved to smoke.
