Gary Robert Berkel

April 9th, 1953January 3rd, 2020

Gary Robert Berkel, age 66, was born on April 9, 1953, in Mt. Clemens, MI to Lois and Bennie Berkel. Gary passed on January 3, 2020 in Boulder, CO surrounded by his loving family. Gary spent his early years in Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1977. That same year Gary moved to Boulder, CO. On September 2, 1978, Gary went back to Michigan to marry Paula Kouri, whom he had grown up with, and they came back to Colorado as husband and wife. It was also at this time that Gary began his career as an engineer for Ball Aerospace, where he worked until retiring in 2014. Gary enjoyed biking, hiking, golf, drawing, painting, and creating little gadgets. His greatest joy, however, came from being a devoted grandfather to Nico. From the moment Nico was born, Gary was right along side him, guiding him and teaching him new things. Gary was known by his quiet gentleness, deep caring for his family, and his twinkling playfullness.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Bennie. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula; son, Alan Berkel of Sonoma, CA; daughter, Andrea Berkel of Lafayette, CO; grandson Nico; brother, Ron (Elaine) Berkel; sister, Betty (Joe) Bloomingburg; sister Mary (Charlie) Casango, and many extended family members, all who loved him deeply.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in memory of Gary Berkel for his grandson, Nico Berkel.

Visitation will be held from 9:30-10:30 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, January 9th, followed by the recitation of the Rosary beginning at 10:30. Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00 followed by a reception at the church.

Although Gary and I had never met Gary we heard wonderful stories of his life with his wife Paula from his brother Ron and sister in law, Elaine. He sounds like a good guy and has a lot of the same qualities as Ron - I know he will missed. So sorry for your loss, you will be in our prayers. Marsha and Gary Lindsey
Sending everyone in the Berkel family so much love in this trying time. I am so grateful to know each and every one of you, and was blessed to see Gary not too long ago and remember his kind smile. Sending hugs and warm blankets for your hearts. Zoe.
Gary was not only a good guy, he was a wonderful guy! One that was on even keel almost all the time. I met Gary in Colorado about 40 years ago and spent some wonderful fun times together, only saw him overly excited maybe one time. So out of character, became a funny memory. So much fun together with him, Paula and family! The world needs more Garys, so sorry to lose him. He will be sorely missed!! Ron Wirth
