Diane Kay Smith

December 8th, 1947April 22nd, 2019

Diane Smith, age 71, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Balfour Skilled Nursing Facility in Louisville, CO after a lengthy illness.  She was born in Council Bluffs, IA on December 8, 1947 to Orvis and Helen Wendt and moved frequently with her construction worker father. Diane graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs in 1966 and was immediately hired as a stenographer for the Strategic Air Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE for her outstanding typing and shorthand skills.

Diane moved to Colorado in 1980 and continued her work for the federal government as an office manager in Denver at the U.S. Department of Labor, helping veterans and victims of black lung disease, completing 30 years of service and retiring in 2005.  She met Wayne Smith in 1989, they married in 1992, and lived in the same small house in Lafayette for the next 27 years.  In 1995, she completed her Bachelor of Behavioral Science at Metro State College.

Some of Diane’s interests were photography, picture framing and scroll sawing.  She crocheted clothing and large afghans for many of us, while finding time to read action novels and all the Harry Potter books.  She achieved the rank of red belt while taking Korean karate classes in Tang Soo Do with Wayne and Nicole for several years until a shoulder injury ended her training just short of the black belt.  Her favorite place to travel was to Mexico with Wayne, beginning with their honeymoon there.  She helped Wayne with many home remodeling projects including the dirty jobs of drywalling and painting.  She thoroughly enjoyed gardening, cooking for and hosting family holidays and events, visiting friends and family, attending plays at the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, and oh yes, bunnies, real and stuffed.  Because of her encroaching illness she couldn’t do as much of all the things she liked in recent years, except love her family and her beloved Bichon Friese pups, Fred and Junior, with all her heart.

Diane was predeceased by her mother and father and her younger brother David.  She is survived by her husband, Wayne, and her two sisters, Pat Bauer of Omaha, NE and Sue Klinkefus of Modesto, CA.  She deeply loved her family with Wayne which included his son, Gregory and daughters Michelle and Nicole, their spouses/partners, and their children Logan, Victoria, Lukas, Austin, Brianna, Katie, and Lia.

Thank you for the excellent care Diane received at Good Sam’s Hospital, the Balfour skilled nursing facility and the TRU Community Care Hospice.  Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (www2.jdrf.org),(or call 800-533-2873) or to the Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation (childrenscoloradofoundation.org), (or call 720-777-1700).
