Arthur Anthony Ortega, Sr.

Lifelong Lafayette, Colorado resident Arthur Ortega Sr., died Saturday, September 1, 2018 at his home with his family at his side. He was 83 years old.

He was born Arthur Anthony Ortega on March 5, 1935 in Lafayette, the son of John and Mary (Gallegos) Ortega.  Growing up in Lafayette, he graduated from Lafayette High School in the class of 1954.

Arthur was inducted into the United States Army in July 1954. He was honorably discharged in June 1956. He was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division, and  a champion boxer in the Third Army.

He was a union carpenter his whole career and helped build most of the major buildings on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder. Arthur was also a construction contractor, building several homes for the Boulder County Housing Authority in the Lafayette and Louisville areas.

Arthur enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and reading. He particularly enjoyed the time spent with his family and grandchildren. Arthur was very active in youth sports, where he coached Lafayette Bobcats Football and Golden Gloves boxing.  Art was known for his courage and strong work ethic.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and siblings:  Lou Owens,  Jim Ortega, Genevieve Zell, Alex Ortega, Maxine Gray, Margarita Rimby, and Alvina Prusso.

Surviving family members are his wife of 47 years, Roseann Ortega;  children Arthur A. Ortega, Jr., John Ortega, Alexander Allen Ortega, and Wendy Leigh McBride and her husband Ryan. He is also survived by his sister Alberta Bird and brother Martin Ortega.  Also surviving are his 8 loving grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Services

Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 9, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette.

Funeral servces will be held on Monday, September 10 at 10:00 AM at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette. 

Burial will follow in the Lafayette Cemetery. A catered reception will follow the burial at the Tri-City Elks Lodge in Louisville.
