James Elmer Tollefson

August 17th, 1935July 23rd, 2018

James E. Tollefson (Jim), 82, passed away on July 23 at his home in Louisville, Colorado after a long, valiant fight with cancer. His Celebration of Life service will be held September 8 at 4 pm at DanWalt Gardens (720 Washington St, Billings, Montana).

Jim was born on August 17, 1935 in Jordan, Montana. He graduated from Billings Central in 1953 and went on to receive two degrees from Oregon State. He then worked for IBM, Avis and FedEx.  He married Patty Marrs and they had three children—Terri, Michael and Robert.  In 2011 he remarried Joyce Hudson.

Jim was a rare type of man, one whose happiness was contagious and who never stopped learning.  He found joy in the ordinary, regularly laughing out loud while reading the comics in the morning newspaper and while discussing episodes of Seinfeld.  He was cultured enough to greatly enjoy theater, regularly attending shows at the Buelle Theater and Boulder Dinner Theater, but also equally loved attending Rockies games and Air Force football games.  He knew and loved his neighbors, and had no problem treating Joyce’s family as his own—earning him the adoring nickname of Papa Jim from his five great grandchildren.  Jim’s boisterous laugh, loving demeaner, and love of life will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Jim is preceded in death by his first wife Patty Marrs Tollefson, his parents, sister and brother.  Jim is survived by his wife, Joyce, his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Moira, daughter, Teri, his son and daughter-in-law, Robert (who sadly passed away five days after Jim) and Lynda, six grandchildren and his brother-in-law, Cliff.  He also leaves behind Joyce’s family who loved him dearly: the Hudson, Coleman, Carter and Jones families.

Special thanks to the wonderful people at True Care Hospice for the outstanding care they provided Jim.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Louisville Fire Department who assisted Jim.
