Maury Drum

June 7th, 1928November 19th, 2017

Maury McRay Drum passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Balfour Senior Living, Louisville,CO. He was 89 years old.

Maury was born in Conover, North Carolina, son of Ray Drum and Amanda Dellinger Drum. He often described his childhood on the farm as "idyllic". He loved farming, hunting with his father and caring for the farm animals,  This self-sufficiency helped him and his family survive the Great Depression.  His childhood church, Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, was a focal point of his family and community life. As the eldest of three brothers, he had many responsibilities -- including driving the school bus while in high school.  He was graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, NC, and the American Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio.  While in seminary, he met Mary Richardson of Sunbury, Ohio, to whom he was married for 63 years until his death.  He served as pastor at: Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Scarsdale, NY; Christ Lutheran Church in Greensboro, NC; and Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Glen Head, NY. Maury also served as Dean (Assistant to the Bishop) - ALC Northeastern District, and Director of Pastoral Care at the Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.  In retirement, Maury and Mary Drum moved to New Hope, PA, where they resided for many years until moving to Louisville, CO. Wherever Maury lived, he offered his services for the betterment of the community.

When not performing clerical duties, Maury enjoyed the beauty and peace of God's creation; walks on the beach or in the woods gave him time to regenerate and reconnect with God and family. Maury devoted a lifetime of service to the Lord while raising a beautiful family with Mary.  At home, Maury was always active -- either in the garden or in the garage.  He especially loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren.

Among his many achievements were starting mission churches in Scarsdale, NY and Greensboro, NC.  For many summers, he was pastoral adviser at  Camp Koinonia in Highland Lake, NY.  While living in New York, he earned a Master in Counseling at New York Theological Seminary in Manhattan.

Maury is survived by his wife, Mary Richardson Drum; his daughters, Leslie(Jeffrey) Pretat,  Andrea (Timothy) Mayer, and Maria (Paul) Dresselhaus. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by son, Jonathan Jesse Drum, granddaughter, Danielle Catherine Pretat, and brothers, Theron and Harold Drum.

Condolences

I have very fond memories of Maury and his family while living in the same neighbor in Glen Head, NY. I served on the council at Our Savior while there with Maury who was such a wonderful joyful pastor as well as a very good friend. I am saddened by his passing and send my deepest sympathy to Mary and family. My thoughts and prayers are with them. It was a privilege to have known Maury, a gift of God. Terry Messer
We were all sorry to hear of Maury's passing. Those of us entrusted to his care while in Pennsylvania were quite fond of both Maury and his lovely wife Mary. We know he will be at peace and Mary will find comfort knowing he is at rest.
