Elfrieda Joyce

July 5th, 1930November 25th, 2017

Born in Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs, Austria to Johann and Aloisia Handsteiner, Elfrieda Joyce, passed away November 26, 2017 at age 87.  She was raised during the depression, WWII, and Russian occupation of Austria.  Elfrieda graduated Summa Cum Laude from the regional Jesuit Gymnasium in Waidhofen in 1948.

Upon graduation Elfrieda worked for the Hohe Tauern Kraftwerk which was building Marshall Plan-funded hydroelectric plants in the Alps above Zell am See, Austria.  Here she met her husband, Donald M. Joyce.  Her son, Donald Joyce, was born in Zell am See.

Elfrieda moved with her family throughout Germany to new assignments for her husband, interrupted briefly by a 3 year stay in the Washington DC area during which she became a US citizen.

The family left Europe and moved to Colorado in 1965 and Boulder in 1969.  They built their dream house high on Sugarloaf Road which they enjoyed immensely until the fire risk encouraged a move back to Boulder.

Elfrieda is survived by her son Donald Joyce and LaVonne Joyce both of Virginia.

The family would like to thank her kind neighbors for their support over the years, as well as her caregivers, the Boulder Rescue Squad, Medical Mobility volunteers, and Meals on Wheels.

So sorry to hear Elfrieda's passing. I did see your Mother several years ago in King Soopers but I don't think she knew me. We have many memories of your Family living next door to us on Sugarloaf. We moved to Longmont last year and are enjoying living here but always remember lots of good times on Sugarloaf. Hope you are doing well. Sincerely, Douglas & Genevieve
