James Ludlow Hiss, Jr

July 4th, 1936October 9th, 2017

Louisville resident James L. “Jim” Hiss, Jr., died Monday, October 9, 2017 at Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville. He was 81 years old.

He was born James Ludlow Hiss, Jr. on July 4, 1936 in West Orange, New Jersey, the son of Janet (Curry) and James L. Hiss, Sr. He grew up in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey and graduated high school there in 1954. He went on to Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1959.

After college, Jim tried his hand at sales with Proctor & Gamble and Prudential.  Neither venture lasted long, and he was sure that he would be remembered as the companies’ worst salesman!  He then returned to the New York area where he saw an American Airlines want ad for a Ramp Agent.  While working for American he caught the “flying bug” and attended American Fliers Flight School in Ardmore, OK. He obtained his commercial pilots license in 1965, and in October of that year was hired by Eastern Airlines.

On one of his earliest flights he met a lovely stewardess and a relationship began. On October 1, 1966, Jim was united in marriage to Donna Jean Bauer in St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Janesville, WI. The couple lived in New York, New Jersey, and then Miami where they raised their two sons. In 1995, the couple moved to Louisville when Jim was hired by Frontier Airlines.  He retired in 1996 and was very proud of the fact that over a thirty-year career he never put a scratch on a single airplane!

Jim was an avid reader, and his collection of books filled shelves and formed stacks throughout his home.  Upon retiring, he and Donna purchased a RV and visited every state but Hawaii.  They made lasting memories with their many friends in the Rocky Mountain Family Motor Coach Association.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents.

Surviving family members are his loving wife of fifty-one years, Donna, of their home in Louisville, sons; David Hiss and his wife Diane of Naperville, IL, and Alan Hiss and his wife Stephanie of Richmond, VA. He is also survived by his brother Bill Hiss and his wife Colleen of Minot, ME, and 3 grandchildren Megan Hiss, Jack Hiss, and Daniel Hiss.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 14, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Darrell Howe Mortuary in Lafayette.

Memorials may be made in Jim’s name to any charity of your choice.

Always will remember your calling me a prude, as I was wearing suspenders and a belt, one X-mas late 70's. Yes, I bb shot Alan on his way to visit Dean. RIP Mr. Hiss With Respect, Kent Lang
