Vivian C. Kalk

 Vivian was born in 1918 to Dicie and Carnot Bevan in their home in Harrison Township, Ohio. She graduated from Gallia Academy High School in 1935, gaining a “Commerce Diploma” from Rio Grande College in 1937. She then went to Ohio State gaining a B.S. Ed. in 1942. From 1942 till 1948 she worked as an accounting clerk and cashier. She married Mike Kalk in February, 1948, having two boys – John and Charles. In the 1950’s she and the children moved to Florida, Ohio, and Nevada, Vivian teaching school while Mike completed his Phd in Education at Ohio State. In the fall of 1961, they all came to Boulder; Mike taking a teaching position in the Education School at CU. Vivian taught in the Boulder Valley School District starting in 1962. She started teaching the mentally retarded in 1963, teaching at the North Broadway School when it opened in 1964. She worked at the North Broadway School, becoming its director from 1969 till 1977, when it moved and was changed to the Ruth M Wood School. She continued to teach the developmentally disabled at the Ruth M Wood School. She earned an MA in Mental Retardation from UNC, Greeley in 1977. Vivian retired from active teaching in 1983. Vivian was a director for Boulder County Enterprises, Inc. from 1977 through 1990. BCE provides employment assistance, assistance in finding living accommodations, and family support to the developmentally disabled. After retirement, she played bridge with many of her teaching friends and others. She was a member of several bridge groups, playing at least 4 times a month. She played bridge the Thursday before entering the hospital.

Vivian enjoyed the out of doors, taking up skiing with her family in the 1960’s and then hiking throughout much of her life. In the 1990’s through to about 2009, she enjoyed a summer hut trip, with John, Debbie, Arnica and several friends. It is basically camping in a hut, but still with no running water and an outhouse. She said it reminded her of her childhood on the farm.

Vivian and Mike were married 57 years before Mike’s death due to Alzheimer’s disease in 2005. Vivian cared for Mike in their home till he died. Charles, her younger son, died in 1974 in a climbing accident.

She is survived by her son, John Kalk (married to Deborah) and her granddaughter, Arnica Kalk.


Services are scheduled for Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the Darrell Howe Chapel. The time for the memorial service is still be decided at this time.
