Carolyn Garvin
January 17th, 1948 — January 24th, 2023
Carolyn Crabtree Garvin was born January 17, 1948, in New London, Connecticut. As an infant she and her family moved to Miami, where she grew up enjoying a childhood of academics, putting on plays, writing short stories and books, and winning track and field events.
Carolyn’s life was defined by devotion to her family. Even as a little girl, she placed her parents’ and brother’s needs before her own, striving to be the perfect daughter. Her recently departed mother and father, Doris and Carl would wholly agree. Her father often commented regarding Carolyn, “No father ever had it better than me”.
In 1970, as a Junior at her beloved Florida State University, she married the boy she met on the very first day of school three years prior, Tom Garvin, at the Officer’s Club at Fort Lee. Tom, a US Army Lieutenant, was deployed to Vietnam after their wedding, and Carolyn continued her studies at FSU and graduated before he returned. They then packed up and headed west to begin their new lives together.
In 1972, along with their little dog Muffin in their VW Beetle, as they crested the hill from Denver into Boulder, they decided then and there that this would be their new home. Six years later they had their first born, Christy, followed by Travis a year and half later.
Carolyn worked as a tireless volunteer, tutor, and photographer in her children’s schools, clubs, and teams. She presided and encouraged her husband in starting his own office furniture dealership which he sold fifteen years later. She brought out the best in all her family through her encouragement, patience, care, and love as a wife and mother.
For those who knew her, Carolyn is understood as a generous and selfless gift-giver. She freely shared her time, creativity, support, and talents to not only her immediate family, but also to anyone that needed it.
Known as Grammy to her five grandchildren, she played an enormous role as caregiver, cheerleader and “Leader of the Goombas”. She was the kindest of hearts and the sweetest of souls and will be missed beyond measure.
She was preceded in death by her Mother and Father, Doris and Carl Crabtree, and survived by her husband Tom, her brother Pierce Crabtree, her daughter Christy (David) Sinkey, son Travis (Erin) Garvin; and 5 grandchildren Georgia, Carly and Julia Sinkey; and Renee and Paul Garvin.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Carolyn on February 11th, at 2:00pm at Grace Commons Church in Boulder, CO. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund. https://giving.cu.edu/fund/lung-cancer-colorado-fund
