Miriam LaVerne Logsdon Denham

September 29th, 1921May 13th, 2022

Miriam LaVerne Logsdon Denham, PhD, passed away on May 13, 2022, in Longmont at age 100. She was born September 29, 1921, in Stark County Ohio to David Bennett Logsdon and Alma Viola Zimmerman Logsdon. She was married to Dale Lee Denham June 30, 1947; he preceded her in death.

Dr. Denham was a Navy WAVE during World War II. She came to Boulder in 1947 to attend the University of Colorado (CU) on the GI Bill. Here she met and married Dale and raised four children. Miriam never lost a chance to learn or to teach. After earning her BA from CU in 1949, she returned to CU’s graduate school. She was awarded her PhD in Biology in 1972, her thesis being on plant trichomes (hairs). For over 40 years the couple traveled together around Colorado, Mexico, and Central America, collecting and describing the plants they found. She continued her travels until they were curtailed by the Covid pandemic. She donated their Colorado native plants collection of some 25,000 plants to CSU, and the tropical collection to a university in Mexico, and many specimens were given to the Smithsonian Institution over the years. She was an instructor at CU for General Biology for Non-science Majors, teaching many future instructors as well as working in CU’s continuing education program. She volunteered with the Colorado Native Plant Society, the City of Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks, and the Boulder County Parks and Open Space, and was always happy to share her vast knowledge of Colorado wildflowers with all.

In addition to her interest in science education, Dr. Denham’s first botanical interest, New World Gesneriads, was never forgotten. She participated in the “3 Gs”, Gloxinia Gesneriad Growers, until the COVID epidemic caused that group to cease meeting. Among other things she wrote the chapter on “Gesneriaceae (African Violet Family)” in Flowering Plants of the Neotropics, 2004. She regularly attended and participated in scientific conferences.

She is survived by her two sisters, Marilynn Doenges and Gwendolyn Ann Bungart; her children, Dale Lee Denham Jr., Doshia Dee Denham Kretke, Rebecca Lucia Denham, and Donald Robert Denham; eight grandchildren; and her many great grandchildren.

The Memorial Service will be held at First Congregational Church Boulder, 1128 Pine St., on Sunday, May 29 at 1:30 PM. Miriam will be laid to rest in Green Mountain Cemetery.
