Carl James Link

February 20th, 1935December 26th, 2021

Carl J. Link died at home unexpectedly on December 26, 2021 in Broomfield, Colorado at the age of 86. The first of five children, he was born February 20, 1935 in Rome, New York to Carl Link and Annella Tomeo Link. He graduated from Purdue University and spent three years in the Army stationed in La Rochelle, France. In 1960 he married Judith Callanen, moved to the Detroit area, and started his career as an appraiser. In 1973 he moved his family of five to Boulder, CO where he was obligated to trade his nightly cigar for running shoes and a bicycle. He soon realized that he wasn’t built for running but stuck with cycling until the day before he died. He loved long distance, multi-day, tour rides despite several crashes that resulted in broken bones and trips to the ER. Later in life he did shorter excursions with the SOBs (Seniors on Bikes) and logged countless miles on a spin bike, although he still crushed a 100-mile ride at the age of 77. His other passions were flying small-engine airplanes, playing bridge, listening to jazz, and reading. He may have read every book ever written in the suspense/thriller genre so long as it was available in a library, as he couldn’t comprehend why anyone would buy a book. He was notoriously frugal and was always on the lookout for the $1.99 breakfast and 50 cent coffee well into the 21st century. Occasionally he would fly his plane as far as Wyoming for the two-egg special, which was tricky to rationalize. Decades before the rest of us, Carl figured out the remote work lifestyle by living in Boulder while working for Valuation Counselors in Los Angeles. His job was to appraise hospitals all over the country and he saw no need to live in LA.  In the early ‘80s he started his own hospital appraisal company, Property Systems, Inc., and flew his own plane on business trips whenever he could. With the exception of a steady stream of one-liners, he was a quiet and reserved person who deeply loved his family.

He is survived by his wife Judith, daughter Susanna See and her family (husband Todd and children David, Nicole, Joe, and Will), daughter Katie Allen and her family (husband Robert and daughter Maia), and son Brian Link and his family (children Ruby, Isabelle, and Connor); as well as three brothers, Richard Link (Juanita), Edward Link (Philomena), Paul Link (Eloise), and one sister Joan Link Fleming (Daniel Fleming). In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to Halleck Creek Ranch where his grandson David and other children with disabilities enjoy riding horses and being outdoors or a donation to the Estes Park Library.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
