May 1st, 1932February 24th, 2021

Jess Gonzalez, a CO native and lifetime resident of Lafayette, passed away at his home February 24th, 2021. Jess was born May 1, 1932 in Longmont, CO to Zenon and Librada (Esparza) Gonzalez. He grew up in Longmont and graduated from Longmont High School in 1950. Jess was active in high school sports playing softball, boxing, and football.  After graduation, he began playing saxophone with a band known as Phil Trujillo & The Vibertones when he met Jenny Munoz.  They were married June 2, 1951 in Welby, CO and lived in Denver for a few years before settling in Lafayette.

Early in his career Jess worked in both a meat packing house and the railroad for several years. He then went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service where he additionally served as a union steward until finally retiring in 1995.  After retirement, Jess continued to work part time for the City of  Boulder for nearly twelve years.

Both Jess and Jenny enjoyed leisurely couple activities such as dancing, camping trips and of course, traveling to visit family.  Las Vegas was an annual trip they looked forward to every year. Jess loved gardening and was especially proud of his rose bushes and green grass.  He was also an animal lover, and had a passion for dogs.  Jess was a forward thinker for his generation, acknowledging the need for conservation and responsible use of the resources mother nature provides.

Most importantly of all, Jess was a religious man who lived closely by his faith and practiced it intensely throughout his life; he was a parishioner at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lafayette.  Jess was an incredibly kind, generous, and loving human being, and he always had an enormous heart.

Jess is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jenny Gonzalez and their 3 children Laura (Ed) Mestas of Erie, Chris Gonzalez of Longmont and Ronda Romero of Lafayette. Six grandchildren; Sandra (Christopher) Gallegos, Leah (Phil) Torrez, Bryan Gonzalez, Christopher (Aubrey) Gonzalez, Brittany Lopez and Lance Romero.  Nine great-grandchildren; Alicia Chacon, Abbey Zepeda, Shawn & Marcus Torrez, Angelo & Ava Lopez and Addison Muniz, Taya & Logan Gonzalez, as well as five great-great-grandchildren: Isaac Chacon, Nico & Ruby, Koursaris and Damien and Danae Zepeda.
