Dolores Varra Mastriona

January 28th, 1938January 5th, 2021

Dolores (Dee) passed peacefully on January 5, 2021 at her daughter’s home surrounded by her family she created. Dee was born on January 28, 1938 in Boulder to Frank and Audrey Varra of Louisville. She was raised on their family farm south of Louisville where she lived her whole life. She graduated from Louisville High School in 1956. In the same year, she married her childhood sweetheart, Frank (Ponzo) Mastriona of Lafayette, at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Denver. Dee and Frank worked their family farm while raising their 5 children. On July 4, 1979 Frank passed unexpectedly.

In 1980, Dee began working at IBM until she retired in 1994. In 1993, Dee married Bud Tharp of Louisville at St. Louis Catholic Church. After 27 years of marriage, Bud passed on February 6, 2020.

Dee was a beloved mother, Nonna, and Original Nonna, as her many great-grandchildren referred to her. She was a devout Catholic and faithful to the Lord. Dee is preceded in death by Frank Mastriona, Bud Tharp, Gregory Mastriona (infant son), Frank and Audrey Varra (parents), Ponzo and Helen Mastriona (father-in-law and mother), and Gary Varra (brother). Dee is survived by her sister Judy Varra, sons Bruce (Tami), Kevin (Lauri), Scott (Candi), Steve, and her daughter DeAnn (Mike), along with her stepdaughter, Keli (Sam) Belmonte, 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Dee loved to travel. She traveled all over the world and greatly enjoyed her time touring Europe with her lifelong friend, Judy DiGiacomo. She enjoyed golfing, cooking, evenings at the Elks with her friends, and spending time with her family. In her later years she enjoyed the warmth of Arizona weather and exploring the country with Bud in their RV. She was an active member of the Italian Club and proud of her Italian heritage which she passed down to her family. More than anything, she loved spending time with her family at Sunday dinner. Together, Dee and Frank created a legacy that will last for generations to come.

The family has asked in lieu flowers that donations be made to St. Louis Catholic Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
